Hamish Mackie Trade Stand by Bowles & Wyer - RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019

Hamish Mackie is one of Britain’s foremost wildlife sculptors, with works in public and private collections around the world, and a regular exhibitor at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Hamish’s stand at the 2019 event was sponsored by land agents Knight Frank, and designed and built by leading landscaping contractor Bowles & Wyer as part of its 25th anniversary celebrations.

The client provided us with a concise, comprehensive design brief for planters, edging and display plinths. This meant our design engineers could concentrate on the methods of manufacture, including shot blasting, laser cutting, folding, welding, corten treatment and finishing.

Using the latest Solidworks 3D modelling software, we created 3D CAD drawings of all the components for approval by the client. The brief specified that all items were to be made in Corten, which we bead-blasted before laser-cutting to give a more consistent finish post-fabrication and also reduce the amount of power required for both laser cutting and welding. Our BySoft nesting software ensured we could achieve the maximum yield per sheet, reducing both wastage and labour.

Once cut, all the parts (which we barcoded for full traceability) went on to folding. Most were reasonably straightforward to fold; however the inside of the plinths had to be made in a single piece, and we used our offline folding software to prove this was achievable prior to starting.

Corten is a generally forgiving material to weld; however, it can be more prone to distortion than mild steel. Our welders have huge experience working with Corten, and once polished achieved a perfect seamless finish on all parts. Corten will take on its typical rusted appearance naturally, but this takes time. To ensure we can met tight deadlines and clients’ expectations, we’ve developed a treatment that allows us to achieve the final finish in a matter of minutes, rather than weeks and months.

The finished project was completed on time and on budget to exacting levels of finish, and all entirely in-house using our standard processes.
