Laser-cut stainless steel portholes

Opened in 2016, the Magic Garden is a family playground in the world-famous Hampton Court Palace gardens. We were commissioned by the Historic Royal Palaces, which operates the attraction, to fabricate metal covers for the porthole windows in the Discovery Tower, a helter-skelter at the heart of Magic Garden. Each of the 12 covers is unique, with a circular design inspired by the Palace’s Tudor architecture and the ‘Age of Discovery’. The covers, about 400mm in diameter, were laser-cut in stainless steel, polished to a high finish and welded to a stainless tube about 100mm deep that fits into the tower wall.  Such a prestigious location required absolute precision in the cutting: we also had to ensure there were no sharp edges, since they are installed in a public space.
