Panel sign

A leading defence contractor commissioned us to produce a decorative panel for the employees’ garden at its site in Scotland, to commemorate its 50th anniversary. Our challenge was to illustrate three local iconic landmarks – the Forth Road and Rail Bridges, and Dunfermline Abbey, last resting place of Robert the Bruce – in 3mm aluminium, from simple reference images (including a postcard!) rather than engineering drawings. Through numerous iterations and mock-ups, our in-house design engineers were able to capture levels of detail far beyond the client’s expectations.

To add further complexity the panel had to be curved. In a roller mill, any hole in sheet metal creates pressure differences that can cause it to distort. To prevent this, each laser-cut shape was left attached in place with a ‘micro-tag’ a fraction of a millimetre across. The panel was then layered between steel sheets to form a laminate, before passing through our CNC roller mill. The laser-cut pieces were then punched out, three supporting legs were welded in place, and the whole assembly was powder coated in black.
